Loubès-Bernac, located in the Lot-et-Garonne, in the region of New Aquitaine, is a lovely little village with 100 residents. The terrain surrounding Loubes-Bernac is dominated by vineyards, sunflower fields, and forests. The Bordeaux and Saint Emilion wine regions are a short drive away. Bordeaux (pronounced “bore-doh”)s an international tourist destination for its architectural and cultural heritage with more than 350 historic monuments, making it, after Paris, the city with the most listed or registered monuments in France. Bordeaux is world-famous for its age-worthy, dry red wines, some of which are the most expensive wines in the world. Ranging from Cabernet Sauvignon blends from historic wineries in the Médoc to Merlot and Cabernet Franc-based wines from “garagistes” in Libournais, Bordeaux has a range of red wines to choose from. The town of Saint Emilion lies just a few miles north of the Dordogne, in the final stages of the river's journey from the hills of the Massif Central to the Gironde estuary. It is renowned as much for its beautiful buildings and scenery as for its wine. Its steep, narrow, cobbled streets, overlooked by its Romanesque church and the iconic 13th-century Tour du Roy tower are a reminder of the town's long history. Just outside of Loubes-Bernac is Plum Village, the largest international practice center in the Plum Village tradition, and the first monastic community founded by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay) in the West. Plum Village is where Thay has realised his dream of building a Beloved Community: creating a healthy, nourishing environment where people can learn the art of living in harmony with one another and with the Earth. Plum Village began in 1982 as a small, rustic farmstead, and has today grown into Europe’s largest Buddhist monastery, with over 200 resident monks and nuns, living and practising in four different hamlets spread out across the French countryside. It is a continuation of the original “Sweet Potato Community” that Thay first founded near Paris in the 1970s, soon after he was exiled from Vietnam. Loubes-Bernac is a magical place in France, full of history, culture and peace.
